A session in Great Lakes Week 2012, an annual gathering of the diverse groups leading the fight to restore the Great Lakes, centers on a research project funded by NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science.Dr. Don Scavia, lead investigator of the project ‘Forecasting the Causes and Consequences of Lake Erie Hypoxia ‘ will be a panelist in this international forum. The session will provide a brief overview of nutrient loadings and associated problems in the Great Lakes (including harmful algal blooms, nuisance algae, and hypoxia), an overview of broad programs for reducing nutrient loadings, and innovative state policy and on-the-ground approaches to tackle this serious problem.
Groups such as Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition, the Great Lakes Commission, the International Joint Commission on the Great Lakes, the Great Lakes Areas of Concern Annual Conference, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and U.S. and Canadian federal environmental agencies convene in a special Joint Session on September 12.
