The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission’s Panel on Harmful Algal Blooms (IPHAB) met in Paris from April 12-14, 2011 to review progress on its priorities and issued Resolutions on several new initiatives in concert with leading international scientific bodies.
During the session, Robert Magnien, a Director at the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, who has been the U.S. lead representative to IPHAB since 2005, was elected to chair the Panel for the next two years. This position builds on NOAA’s leadership for national HAB research and international coordination as required by the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Act and will help to support U.S. priorities including HAB biotoxin detection/regulation in international commerce, management practices to protect public health, understanding and protecting fishery resources threatened by HABs, bloom prevention efforts linked to nutrient pollutions, inclusion of HAB detection in observing systems, and HAB forecasting.
