From June 4 -6, researchers from the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) met with Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL) staff and regional university scientists from Heidelberg University, University of Toledo, Ohio State University, and the University of Michigan at the International Great Lakes Conference in Lafayette, IN. Participants developed new collaborative efforts to detect and understand harmful algal blooms (HABs), with focused discussions about the 2011 and 2012 blooms and NCCOS’sweekly and seasonal forecasts of these blooms. The goal of these discussions is to improve monitoring and enhance the accuracy of future forecasts, as well as to continue to shed light on the role nutrients play in the bloom cycle.
