NCCOS scientist, Dr. Carolyn Currin, North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve Education Coordinator, Lori Davis, and North Carolina Sea Grant Marine Education Specialist, Teri Kerby Hathaway, are bringing the successful 'From Seeds to Shorelines' project to teachers in coastal North Carolina. Dr. Carolyn Currin conducted the initial training with 10 teachers that will implement the program which involves students contributing in all steps of restoring Spartina alterniflora (smooth cord grass). Classrooms will collect seeds this Fall, germinate and cultivate the seeds in a small greenhouse that is constructed in the classrooms, and plant the Spartina plants next Spring at select sites along the coast including theRachel Carson National Estuarine Research Reserve in Beaufort, NC.

This is the first year that the program, originally designed and implemented in South Carolina by Sea Grant, will be offered to teachers in Carteret County. Expanded to NC and Georgia by an EPA grant, the program is free to teachers. Lori Davis hopes to expand the program to more teachers and schools next year.
