This August, neighboring scientists in Beaufort, NC organized and taught a course focusing on the fundamentals of acoustics: communication and hearing ofmarine mammals, measuring impacts of ocean noise, fisheries sonar, and measuring soundin the ocean.
Along with lectures on active and passive acoustics from visiting scientistsfrom universities and non-governmental agencies in California, Washington, Tasmania, United Kingdom, andNOAA, students were able to gain hands-on experience using a variety of active sonarsin the inshore waters of Beaufort, NC. The course was attended by US and internationalgraduate students and NOAA scientists.
This course, held on the Duke University Marine Lab campus, represents one of many collaborations between the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science and Duke over the past 30years.
