Dr. Nancy N. Rabalais, long-time NCCOS-sponsored scientist, has been awarded the distinguished Heinz Award for her research and leadership identifying and characterizing the dynamics of the Gulf of Mexico dead zone. The Heinz Awards were established by Teresa Heinz in 1993 to honor the memory of her late husband, U.S. Senator John Heinz, and to recognize the extraordinary achievements of individuals in the areas of greatest importance to him.

The award was presented at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington, DC on November 16, 2011. Dr. Rabalais has been active in NCCOS sponsored hypoxia research for over 20 years.
