NCCOS Highlights Aquaculture and Fisheries Conflicts in Lecture at North Carolina Oyster Farm

On July 17, 2013, NOAA staff from NCCOS’ CCMA, CCFHR and an international partner from Portugal participated in a Duke University class studying global fisheries conflicts. The class was convened on an oyster farm near Beaufort, NC with presentations focused on conflicts among fishermen, growers and residents, the role of shellfish aquaculture in mitigating eutrophication in estuaries, governance issues,and opportunities for aquaculture to stabilize declining fisheries and support local economies.

These issues were framed in context with global trends with case studies fromthe US, EU, Asia and South America.Students arrived at the oyster farm on kayaks and were treated to fresh oysters after the lecture.
