Predicting a low, gulf-wide red tide for the Gulf of Maine

map showing concentrations of Alexandrium cysts in Gulf of Maine bottom sediments in October 2023.NOAA is predicting a low, gulf-wide red tide for the Gulf of Maine this summer, continuing the pattern of smaller blooms observed in the region over the last few years. Scientists can estimate the size of red tides in the spring and summer by counting the number of Alexandrium cysts in bottom sediments the preceding fall.  https://coastalscience.noaa.gov/news/low-gulf-of-maine-red-tide-predicted-for-2024
