NOAA's National Coral Reef Monitoring Program completed their 2023 monitoring season in the Caribbean

Published on: 12/06/2023

A diver observes a coral reef with bleached coral colonies scattered around. And that’s a wrap on the 2023 Caribbean sampling season! NOAA’s National Coral Reef Monitoring Program recently completed a survey of fish and benthic habitats at 21 sites offshore of Salinas, Puerto Rico. The intent of these missions is to assess and monitor coral health and climate-related threats. The team observed extensive coral bleaching at each of the 21 sites, due to a current marine heatwave affecting the entirety of the Caribbean. Information collected during the 2023 U.S. Caribbean monitoring will be available in 2024. coastalscience.noaa.gov/news/2023-caribbean-ncrmp-sampling-missions-complete/coastalscience.noaa.gov
