Predation Challenges at Hydropower Dams (Silver Spring, MD or Virtual)

Summary / Description

The future is now! The predators are here! They devastate migratory fish, divide partners, and smash our fish restoration efforts to pieces. We need your help!

An intern is requested to help the hydropower team create and conduct a national survey on predation at hydropower dams. The fellow, using survey results, will create a repository of the information that includes hydropower project details, location in the watershed, extent of predation, types of predators, mitigation efforts, and relevant documents. Over the course of the summer the intern will:

  • Learn about fish passage, hydropower, predation, and habitat requirements for migratory fish.
  • Survey NMFS staff to populate an inventory dataset characterizing predation risks and challenges at projects in which we are engaged, e.g., species present, estimated effect, mitigation efforts, etc.
  • Compile responses and build a nationwide inventory dataset quantifying predation at hydropower projects.
  • Synthesize the results of the surveys and pertinent information in a short presentation, and, working with the team, create maps to illustrate the predation challenges and mitigation efforts.
  • Prepare a short written report and present their work to NMFS staff.

Skills Required

Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are a necessity! In addition, a desire to speak and engage with the team, strong organizational skills, proficiency in oral and written communication, and the ability to work independently are important. Experience conducting or assisting with research, and an understanding of or interest in ecology are desirable. Interest or skills in mapping or GIS is beneficial but not required.
