The Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (WBNERR) is developing a detailed map of estuarine habitats and plant communities in collaboration with NOAA’s Office of Coastal Management. This summer, we will be conducting detailed field validation and editing/revision of the mapping data. The intern will be assisting with this work, gaining skills in estuarine plant identification and GIS. In addition, and related to the habitat mapping, WBNERR has collected data of up to 100 red cedar trees adjacent to the Reserve’s salt marsh observatory three times since 2013. The intern would work on analyzing the data, and potentially collect new data to assess the effects of climate change and sea level rise on salt marsh migration into the adjacent coastal forest.

WBNERR can provide some field gear such as wading boots, gloves, rain jackets, though the intern may prefer to use their own wading boots. The intern will be required to adhere to and support the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and WBNERR’s, policies, mission, and vision.
Type of Opportunity
- Research and Stewardship (Natural Resource Management)
Location
- Hybrid – Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (WBNERR) in Falmouth, MA, and virtual. Some in-person time will be required – at least one to two weeks. The rest of the time can be done virtually. WBNERR has temporary, shared-style housing available on site. The intern would have their own bedroom and need to provide their own bedding/linens.
