Comparative study of marine mammal bycatch self-reports and observer reports  (Silver Spring, MD or Virtual)

Summary / Description

The objective of the project is to characterize marine mammal bycatch data from the Marine Mammal Authorization Program (MMAP) mortality and injury reports. Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), fishermen are required to report all marine mammal mortalities or injuries incidental to commercial fishing within 48 hours of returning from a trip.  Some fisheries are also required to carry observers who record marine mammal bycatch information. You will analyze MMAP and observer data to evaluate the effectiveness of the MMPA self-reporting requirement and identify differences between bycatch documented in both the self and observer reports. Data for analyses includes both marine mammal and fishery information. Reports are from all marine mammal taxonomic groups (small cetaceans, large whale and pinnipeds) and various different fisheries (trawls, longlines, nets, etc.). The intern will analyze and compare mortality and injury reports and observer data and prepare a report on hotspots of marine mammal mortalities or injuries and the compliance rate of self-reports.
