Cell counts observed on Florida’s NE coast over the past several weeks were Karenia papilionacea and not Karenia brevis

Composite 8-days of satellite imagery up to 09-07-2026 showing location of algae bloomFollowing additional genetic testing, FWRI has confirmed that the cell counts observed on Florida’s NE coast over the past several weeks were Karenia papilionacea and not Karenia brevis. K. papilionacea produces substantially less toxin than K. brevis, and no brevetoxins have been detected in NE Florida. We will continue to monitor conditions throughout Florida and will return to issuing bulletins every other week.
