NCCOS is currently tracking an active Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) event within the Chesapeake Bay

Satellite image of Chesapeake Bay showing chlorophyll bloom in some of the tributaries.NCCOS is currently tracking an active Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) event within the Chesapeake Bay. Relative Fluorescence data indicate blooms affecting the lower Bay and all major tributaries along the Virginia western shore, with high concentrations of Margalefidinium polykrikoides confirmed by partners at Old Dominion University, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, and Maryland DNR.

NCCOS scientists track where high biomass algal blooms are occurring and how their extent changes over time using satellite monitoring products developed by NCCOS with NOAA’s Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service CoastWatch and regional partners. These observations help resource managers better understand current bloom conditions and advise state response efforts in Virginia and Maryland.
