Brewer is the Director of Kasitsna Bay Lab (KBL) for the NOAA’s National Center for Coastal Ocean Sciences located in Seldovia, Alaska. KBL is one of four NCCOS labs in the US and the only one located on the Pacific coast. KBL performs research on coastal mapping, harmful algal blooms, and oceanographic modelling.
Brewer began his early work focused on invertebrate ecology, fisheries population dynamics and scientific diving. He has been a university professor for 20 years, a university administrator for 12 years, and has been working with NCCOS since 2024. Brewer has been a PADI Dive Instructor, worked for Alaska Sea Grant, and worked in Southeast, Southcentral, and Southwest Alaska for the last 25 years. Brewer currently lives in the nearby community of Homer with his wife Sarah, and his two boys Finnegan and Oliver.
Brewer received a B.S. in Environment Engineering in 1995 from the United States Military Academy at West Point, a M.S. in 2004 and a Ph.D. in 2016 in Marine Biology from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
