Fostering Knowledge-Sharing and Connection Across MPAs (Virtual)

Summary / Description

The Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) serves as the trustee for a network of marine protected areas (MPAs) encompassing more than 629,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters from Washington state to the Florida Keys, and from Lake Huron to American Samoa. ONMS also works to strengthen and connect the nation’s MPAs, and serve as a resource to all federal, state, territorial and tribal programs responsible for the health of the nation’s oceans. Through this internship an interested student will support ONMS in its mission to improve MPA design, stewardship and effectiveness, connect MPA programs, and advance public understanding and partnerships about MPA programs. 

Specifically the selected intern will undertake activities such as: 

  • Facilitate and provide logistical support for convening, connecting, and communicating with a nationwide network of MPA Managers; 
  • Support knowledge sharing across MPAs; 
  • Work on public communications materials (website, social media, and StoryMaps) that share the role and impact of ONMS as a thought leader on MPAs;  and,  
  • Provide support on projects related to international coordination, resilience to changing environmental conditions, MPA mapping and classification, as well as other activities yet to be identified. 

Skills Required

  • Academic or professional interest in marine conservation, communications, and knowledge management 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills 
  • Experience with data visualizations and developing communications products 
  • Experience working independently on research and writing, with some supervision
  • Detail oriented with a willingness to learn, adapt and problem-solve
