Evaluation of conservation science as an ecosystem service (Flower Garden Banks NMS) (Virtual or Silver Spring, MD or Galveston, TX)

Summary / Description

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation (NMSF), in partnership with NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS), is leading a project to quantify conservation science as an ecosystem service of the National Marine Sanctuary System. Sanctuaries provide protected, well-managed environments that support scientific research, long-term monitoring, and conservation innovation, while also generating regional economic activity through research-related investments and operations.

This project compiles and analyzes scientific research conducted in and around National Marine Sanctuaries through a comprehensive, site-by-site literature review. The intern will assist with reviewing scientific publications using AI-supported tools, organizing and synthesizing research records, and developing historical summaries of research activity across sanctuary sites. The intern will gain experience in research synthesis, conservation science, ecosystem services valuation, and applied environmental analysis, while contributing to a nationally relevant conservation initiative.
