The intern will experiment with using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist NOAA in processing comments on public notices and distilling the information into tables and other formats that characterize the comments. The intern will experiment with prompts and creation of a closed AI system to accomplish tasks. Time permitting, the intern will explore the application of generative AI for purposes of environmental compliance document generation. With all tasks, the focus will be on tracking accuracy and utility of AI tools and prompts. The intern will learn about the public comment process for National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents and the nature of comments that are submitted by the public. The intern will gain skills in applying AI to the environmental compliance process in order to increase the speed of the work while not compromising accuracy. The work is current and useful in terms of future job prospects. Practical experience will be gained applying AI to real world environmental compliance tasks, enhancing knowledge of the potential use of AI to streamline government functions. The intern will be expected to work somewhat independently to collate and distill multiple documents and then check for accuracy. The mentor will be available for guidance whenever it is needed. There will be an opportunity to work with other experts in the NOAA network through the NOAA AI workgroup.
