Economic impacts of ocean- and marine-related education (Virtual)

Summary / Description

The blue economy is growing, but who is training the next generation of coastal leaders? Help the NOAA Office for Coastal Management answer critical questions about the future of our workforce. You will investigate how demand for marine-related degrees is shifting, identify which regions are leading the charge in marine job training, and calculate the economic ripple effects of marine higher education spending.

The selected intern will join the Socioeconomics Team as a core contributor to a pilot project, gaining practical experience with quantitative analysis for social science. Working alongside a NOAA economist, they will:

  • Shape the Research: Refine the project plan and methodology.
  • Wrangle the Data: Build robust datasets using Excel and RStudio, utilizing advanced query techniques to find relevant educational trends.
  • Tell the Story: Conduct statistical analysis and interpret the results to create a narrative about the value of ocean- and marine-related education.

The ideal candidate would have an interest in coastal resource management and social science, basic proficiency with statistical software (R preferred), and solid critical thinking skills. Extensive research experience is not required. We are looking for potential and an eagerness to learn!

Skills Required

Microsoft Excel, basic proficiency with statistical software (preferably R), attention to detail, comfort manipulating large datasets, and ability to work independently.
