White House Nutrient Challenge Prize Aimed at Reducing Nutrient Pollution

In response to the limited success of current efforts to reduce nutrient pollution, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is developing a 'Challenge Prize' to promote new and faster innovations to address problems such as excess nitrogen and phosphorous (P), and the toxic algal blooms and low oxygen levels they produce.

This effort builds upon current prizes addressing nutrient pollution, notably the $10M Florida Everglades Foundation P capture prize, and the $1M Tulane University Water Prize. NCCOS contribution to the Challenge Prize will be scientific coordination of stakeholder interests with partner capabilities.

The May 7 meeting also included partners from EPA, USGS, USDA, Tulane University, Florida Everglades Foundation, and Iowa Department of Agriculture.
