The USF Sargassum Outlook for the month of July estimates the total Sargassum amount in the entire Atlantic Ocean (including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of America) to be 38 million metric tons. Significant Sargassum inundation events have continuously been reported around most Caribbean nations and islands.
NCCOS-funded scientists are working to improve existing Sargassum detection and forecasting technologies. Improved alerts will give communities in Florida, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands more time to mobilize responses and minimize the harm caused by Sargassum inundation events. https://coastalscience.noaa.gov/project/developing-an-operational-sargassum-hab-monitoring-and-forecasting-system-for-the-southeastern-u-s-and-u-s-caribbean/
