The 2025 Gulf of Maine Alexandrium catenella forecast season has come to an end

map of Gulf of Maine shows observed mytilus toxicity with dots and lines showing concentration levelsThe 2025 Gulf of Maine Alexandrium catenella forecast season has come to an end. Each year, NCCOS issues short-term forecasts of Alexandrium catenella, a #HarmfulAlgalBloom species that can cause paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) in the Gulf of Maine.

NCCOS released five A. catenella dashboards during the bloom season this year. The dashboards provide early warning for bloom onshore landing potential and resulting shellfish toxicity, focusing in the western Gulf of Maine. Coastal state managers, New England fisheries, and other stakeholders use these products to prepare for paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxicity events. This year, the model successfully forecasted the development, distribution, and termination of the bloom in the coastal western Gulf of Maine, as confirmed by field samples from state partners in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. https://coastalscience.noaa.gov/science-areas/habs/hab-forecasts/gulf-of-maine/
