NCCOS researchers work with residents in Oxford and Hoopers Island, MD to better understand how coastal communities experience and respond to flooding

A marsh with calm water and various grasses boarders a cracked road.
Surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay on the west and the Honga River on the east, Hoopers Island is a narrow strip of land characterized by tidal saltmarshes, wetlands, and low-lying woods.

NCCOS researchers are working with residents in Oxford and Hoopers Island, Maryland, to better understand how coastal communities experience and respond to flooding. Community workshops are helping researchers learn how residents perceive flood risks, adapt to recurring flooding, and view future resilience options. These insights can help inform flood planning that reflects local needs, values, and experiences.
