NCCOS HAB Event Response funding helped support phytoplankton detected in Kachemak Bay

snowcapped mountains visible beyond bow of ship in Eldred PassageIn early September, elevated abundances of the HAB-forming phytoplankton Alexandrium were detected in Kachemak Bay. NCCOS #HAB Event Response funding helped support coordinated sampling and testing efforts to notify communities about potential impacts to human health and wildlife in the region. This is separate from the NCCOS-funded response effort that also occurred in Kachemak Bay in July 2025 due to a bloom of Psuedo-nitszchia.
