Lake Erie hypoxia forecast models detected low to no oxygen in the western basin of the lake

Last week, our Lake Erie hypoxia forecast models detected low to no oxygen in the western basin of the lake. While uncommon in the western basin, hypoxic conditions can impact water quality, and kill fish and other aquatic organisms. Fortunately, strong winds over the past week have helped to reoxygenate most of the water. NOAA’s forecast gave drinking water managers early warning so they were prepared to respond if needed.
