HAB-related shellfish closures have been a public health concern in Oregon for many decades. Unlike its neighbors to the north and south, Oregon has historically never received state funding for its harmful algal bloom (HAB) monitoring. Instead, Oregon state agencies have relied on a patchwork of grants from NOAA. After 20 years, these monitoring efforts are now sustained by state funding.
