During Mesophotic and Deep Benthic Communities restoration expedition in the Gulf, an AUV is underwater and working 24 hours a day

Two people look at a series of computer monitors aboard a boat.

During the current Mesophotic and Deep Benthic Communities restoration expedition in the Gulf, an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is underwater and working 24 hours a day. Because they are not tethered to a surface ship, AUVs can travel relatively quickly and efficiently to remote places too deep for divers and over a greater expanse than remotely operated vehicles. The AUV follows a programmed mission set by pilots on board the ship — once underwater, the team monitors the track of the AUV, watching for any issues.
