Accurate elevation data needed to understand current marsh dynamics in Acadia National Park

An authorized research drone parked on the ground next to open water in Bass Harbor Marsh.Following the devastating winter storms of 2024 in Acadia National Park, accurate elevation data was needed to understand current marsh dynamics and better prepare for future climate-driven events.

NCCOS’ Effects of Sea Level Rise Event Response Program provided funding to support high-resolution drone surveys that collected baseline lidar and multispectral imagery of the park’s largest salt marsh to help model the effects of storm surge and sea level rise. These data will directly inform coastal resilience efforts and restoration planning in collaboration with Wabanaki scientists and communities, Friends of Acadia, and Schoodic Institute. https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/acad_change-bass-harbor.htm
