A severe toxic algae bloom event in Washington’s Hood Canal is showing the value of NOAA science.
Using a highly sensitive test developed by NOAA scientists, the Washington State Department of Health detected rising shellfish toxin levels early and quickly closed harvest areas. The early warning likely prevented illnesses and a major seafood recall while protecting the state’s shellfish industry.
The test also provided faster results, reduced costs, and eliminated the need for thousands of mice compared with the traditional testing method. NOAA continues to work with state and Tribal partners to expand access to this modern shellfish toxin testing tool and strengthen seafood safety nationwide.
