Technology Transfer: Promoting NOAA’s Inventions and Technology Partnerships (MD)

Posted on: 02/03/2017
Research Area(s): Internships / General

Summary / Description

The Technology Partnerships Office (TPO) in Silver Spring, MD, is responsible for promoting NOAA’s new and commercially viable technologies to industry with the goal of getting these technologies out of the lab and into the market place.  This activity is known as “Technology Transfer” and was authorized by Congress through legislation developed in the 1980s.

To support technology transfer, the TPO develops marketing campaigns using email, social media, and its websites to let industry and the public know what new technologies are available.  The TPO is seeking a candidate that can provide well-written and designed promotional materials describing the important features of each NOAA technology in the portfolio.

The TPO also manages NOAA’s Small Business Innovation Research Program, or SBIR, which provides seed funding to U.S. small businesses to develop new technologies that are innovative and applicable to NOAA’s mission.  While this program is largely administrative, there is a requirement to identify and promote success stories from past SBIR awards.

Candidates who are interested in communicating to the public across a broad range of scientific disciplines and who would like to learn more about technology transfer, NOAA, and how we help build the U.S. economy, should apply for this position.

Skills Required

We are seeking a student who has strong communications skills and an interested in learning more about translating technical documents into compelling marketing pieces.    The end use for these documents will be public dissemination through website and email campaigns direct to industry, so the candidate should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, an interest in science and technology, and an ability to translate complex scientific terminology into easily understood and compelling text.

In addition to marketing NOAA technologies, the candidate will have an opportunity to also promote the TPO itself through the development of success stories to be posted via websites, newsletters, and social media.  Candidates who are interested in or proficient in website content structure and design will find this position interesting.
