The Ecosystems and Fisheries Oceanography Coordinated Investigations program at NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory looks to broaden its reach and deepen its impact through communications and storytelling. The student will primarily support the writing and implementation of EcoFCOI content across multiple platforms including short format stories, social media posts, talking points and one pagers. The student will also be given the opportunity to work on an independent research story concept that meets their interests, as well as those of EcoFOCI. The student should expect to create polished work that can be included in a portfolio at the completion of the internship program.
The Ecosystems and Fisheries Oceanography Coordinated Investigations program is a multi-NOAA office program based in Seattle, WA. Scientists study the ecosystems of the North Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea and U.S. Arctic to improve understanding of ecosystem dynamics and apply that understanding to the management of living marine resources. EcoFOCI scientists integrate field, laboratory and modeling studies to determine how varying biological and physical factors influence large marine ecosystems within Alaskan waters. EcoFOCI content supports, leads, and inspires our community with groundbreaking research and storytelling to care for and explore the implications of climate and fisheries-oceanography off Alaska.
The student will learn about NOAA programs, science and structure through content development. The student will gain experience on various platforms and help execute a communications strategy for a wide audience. The student will learn about basic communications strategies to support science products and programs from planning to publication. The student will meet and interview experts within NOAA including; principal investigators, engineers, field support and communications personnel to develop access-driven storytelling.
NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (within NOAA Research) makes critical observations and conducts research to advance our knowledge of the global ocean and its interactions with the earth, atmosphere, ecosystems, and climate. NOAA’s Alaska Fisheries Science Center (within NOAA Fisheries) monitors the health and sustainability of fish, marine mammals, and their habitats across nearly 1.5 million square miles of water surrounding the state of Alaska, which produces more than half of the fish caught in the United States, worth $1.8 billion.
