National Marine Sanctuaries Accessibility Guide

Posted on: 12/15/2017
Research Area(s): Internships / General

Summary / Description

The National Marine Sanctuary System is seeking a volunteer intern to help prepare a first ever Sanctuaries Accessibility Guide, providing information on the accessibility of sanctuary visitor centers, beaches, shore-side and water-based recreation, sports, and other opportunities for the fourteen sites of the sanctuary system (sanctuaries.noaa.gov/). This guide will help provide information to help ensure all Americans, including those with disabilities, are aware of recreational and educational opportunities related to the Nation’s premier ocean park network. We hope to release the guide in October 2018, National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The major responsibilities of the intern will be amending an outline of the Sanctuaries Accessibility Guide; conducting interviews with sanctuary staff to gather information; conducting research on and verifying available accessibility resources (understanding that nearly all resources will be owned and/or managed by other authorities); and writing the guide, in cooperation with others as necessary

Skills Required

Exceptional writing skills and research skills are a must, as are being an independent worker who also enjoys being a member of a small, hard working team. Knowledge of accessibility issues and resources is a great bonus but not necessary.
