Communications, Outreach and Education with NOAA Science Camp (Seattle, WA or Virtual)

Summary / Description

This project seeks up to two interns to participate in NOAA summer education and outreach activities, with an emphasis on marine aquaculture education and outreach.

NOAA Science Camp is a week-long day camp program that introduces middle school and high school students to earth and ocean sciences and science careers through hands-on activities emphasizing solutions to real-world problems. Campers work alongside NOAA scientists and dive into becoming scientists themselves through activities such as analyzing water samples and seeing how buoys help predict large-scale climate events. Camp educators will support learning through fun and engaging games and encourage campers to synthesize their experiences through a culminating science presentation at the end of the week.

The NOAA Aquaculture Science Camp “Mini Session” will offer hands-on aquaculture learning opportunities for up to 50 middle school students from Title 1 schools in King County, Washington. Students will gain experience in shellfish biology and anatomy, water quality and environmental monitoring, survey and business techniques, and career pathways in aquaculture. The camp will also include a field trip to observe aquaculture in action.

Interns will help support camp programming, working directly with NOAA and Sea Grant experts and student campers, support curriculum development, draft outreach and communications materials like blogs, newsletters, and web content for the NOAA and Sea Grant websites, and gain experience working with a large team of science educators and communicators.
