Advancing commercial sablefish (black cod) aquaculture by addressing key research needs (Manchester Research Station, Port Orchard, WA)

Summary / Description

Research at the NOAA Fisheries Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) is aimed at increasing domestic seafood production. Specific goals for this project are focused on advancing the science of sablefish production to support commercial aquaculture industry development and success.

The intern will work as a team member with the NWFSC’s Aquaculture Program to assist with efforts to establish a footprint for commercial US sablefish (a.k.a. black cod) aquaculture production and advance this emerging industry. Key research areas that are being addressed involve projects involving Aquatic Animal Health and Disease Management (e.g. vaccine development) and Reproductive Physiology (i.e., enhancing spawning success of captive broodstock and developing novel methods of sterility induction). 

Skills Required

  • Interest in aquaculture, fisheries, or a closely related field and understand water quality issues that may affect aquatic species..
  • Willingness to participate in all fish husbandry practices for sablefish including feeding, sampling, grading, vaccinating, etc. 
  • Basic laboratory skills and willingness to work on research projects addressing fish health and disease management and reproductive biology. 
  • Intern should be detail oriented and be able to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
