Sponsorship of 2008 International Eutrophication Symposium Would Promote Development and Application of Management Tools
A National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) scientist’s keynote speech in June 2006 at “An International Symposium: Research and Management of Eutrophication in Coastal Ecosystems” resulted in a request by symposium organizers that NOAA serve as lead sponsor and organizer for the next symposium. Proposed to take place in 2008, “Management, Modeling and Research of Eutrophication in Coastal Ecosystems” would continue to promote international scientific exchange, comparison of successful management actions, and development and application of management tools. The request for NCCOS to serve as the lead 2008 organizational contact point has received preliminary National Ocean Service approval, contingent on the outcome of the FY 07 budget process. The 2008 planning committee would seek co-sponsorship from universities and other agencies, including NOAA’s sister agency in China, the State Oceanographic Administration. The Estuarine Research Federation has already indicated willingness to provide operational and logistical support for the symposium and to publish a special proceedings issue of Estuaries and Coasts.
