NCCOS, NMSP and National MPA Center Launch Partnership to Improve Ecosystem-Based Management of Marine and Coastal Resources

The National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), National Marine Sanctuary Program (NMSP) and National Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Center have launched a partnership to develop west coast-wide biogeographic assessment products, to aid in evaluating and improving ecosystem-based management of marine managed areas (MMAs). This partnership will provide support to the MPA Center on its West Coast Pilot Project, which is developing methods, approaches and collaborations to enhance MPA management and inform the development of an effective regional system of MPAs for the west coast. The pilot project will also support the National Marine Sanctuary Program in its mission in implementing strategies for improved ecosystem-based management of coastal resources. The new assessment products will specifically address the need for ecosystem-level knowledge of marine and coastal resources, and when integrated with the West Coast Pilot, will help identify gaps in protection and stewardship priorities for important habitats and resources.
