Prediction, Response, and Status of New England Red Tide 2010

Outlook for 2010

In March 2010, NOAA CSCOR-supported scientists at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and North Carolina State University (NCSU) issued an outlook for a significant New England Red Tide, or Alexandrium fundyense bloom, in the Gulf of Maine. The 2010 bloom event is expected to be at least as extensive as the major regional bloom of 2005. The 2010 forecast was based on runs of a biological-physical model, developed with ECOHAB and MERHAB support, using weather scenarios typical of the last few years.
