Interim Report on the Dolphin Mortality Event in St. Joseph Bay, Florida
NOAA scientists announced the release of the Interim Report on the Dolphin Mortality Event in St. Joseph Bay, Florida. This year’s most dramatic Unusual Mortality Event (UME) claimed the lives of 107 bottle-nosed dolphins. NCCOS Center programs played major roles in the initial response and the on-going investigations to determine the cause. NCCOS participated in sampling during the event, conducted HAB toxin analyses and phytoplankton species identifications, provided remote sensing images to locate HABs in the area, and provided Event Response funds to facilitate investigations by Florida State resource managers.
