NCCOS and International Joint Commission Scientists Prepare to Publish 20 Years of NOAA Mussel Watch Results

NCCOS scientists met with Victor Serveiss, Environmental Advisor to the International Joint Commission (IJC), to put the finishing touches on a Mussel Watch contribution to the next iteration of the Great Lakes Biennial Report set for publication this year (2012). This report provides an overview of NOAA and Mussel Watch monitoring efforts in the region since 1992.

The Mussel Watch contribution to the report is one of ten that focus on specific indicators for assessing trends of the Great Lakes since 1987. Gunnar Lauenstein will be presenting the next round of Mussel Watch Great Lakes results at the International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) meeting in Cornwall, Ontario Canada May 13-17, 2012.

The Mussel Watch-IJC partnership resulted from a presentation by NCCOS’ Kimiani Kimbrough at the IAGLR meeting in Duluth, MN in 2011 and subsequent coordination with IJC staff including Lana Pollack who was appointed Chair of the U.S. Section of the IJC by President Obama in June of 2010.
