NCCOS Scientists Attend 'Climate Adaptation for Coastal Communities' Course

Published on: 08/25/2015
Research Area(s): Coastal Change

This summer, a small group of NCCOS scientists completed an interactive training course intended to provide participants with the necessary skills to address climate adaptation planning within their local community.

The course, developed by NOAA's Office for Coastal Management and local partners, included discussions on climate change trends and impacts, how to scope and conduct a vulnerability assessment, and how to communicate research and adaptation techniques effectively at the community level. The training included daily activities that provided an interactive means by which to explore and practice these concepts. Local guest speakers alsoprovided their expertise and insights on climate adaptation. Guest speakers included representatives from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, George Mason University, Calvert County, MD, and Talbot County, MD.

The course supports apartnership with the CoastSmart Communities Program and the Town of Oxford, MD (Talbot County), who are currently assessing Oxford's vulnerability to climate change and related coastal hazards by developing integrated vulnerability indicators that consider social, economic, infrastructure, and environmental factors.
