Understanding how soil moisture helps control low streamflow and fish habitat in the Russian River basin
Summary / Description
The Russian River located in Northern California is a major source of water for both agriculture and human consumption. The river drains a basin area of 3,846 square kilometers into the Pacific Ocean. The river provides freshwater habitat for warm and cold fish migration and spawning. Beginning in late Spring and extending into Fall, flow in the river is partially controlled by the soil moisture content in the river basin. The NOAA Hydrometeorology Testbed Program operates a soil moisture monitoring network in the river basin.
You will help analyze and compare the soil moisture observations with forecasts of soil moisture and streamflow from the NOAA Office of Hydrology Research Distributed Hydrological Model (HL-RDHM). The goal of this project is to help understand how soil moisture observations can be used to improve simulations of streamflow during periods of low flow with an emphasis on fish habitat impacts.
