Fathom That: Updating and Expanding a Mobile Website and Audio Tour of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary’s Resources, Research and History

Fathom That! is an education/outreach program that involves a mobile website and series of audio messages that inform the public about Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. The audio messages and complementary web pages cover breaking news, sanctuary events, regional history and sanctuary resources, research, education and conservation. Representative recorded messages have covered ship noise and its effects on whales’ hearing and behavior, the use of Stellwagen Bank during Prohibition, and the sinking of the steamship Portland during the 1898 Portland Gale.
You will new messages for the Fathom That! program, including news stories, research missions, and updates on sanctuary resources, particularly marine mammals and birds. You’ll assist in the recording and audio editing of those messages and collect photo and video assets for use in the Fathom That companion website. You will also help promote the Fathom That! program via press releases and social media.
Strong writing skills, understanding of marine conservation issues and a wide range of marine sciences, ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team as well as independently. Familiarity and comfort working with Adobe Photoshop, audio production programs and social media recommended. Video editing skills are desired but not required.
Internship Location: Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, Scituate, MA 02066 (south of Boston and north of Cape Cod).
